Supergirl dress not done

Well, I thought I had finished the Supergirl dress, but then I decided to wash it before putting it on my model.  Unfortunately, the raw edge that was supposed to be folder under, was not.  When the dress came out of the washing machine the hem had come unraveled in places, sigh.  I ripped out the hem stitches last night.  Perhaps tonight I will give it another shot.  I’ve been avoiding my iron because it’s been so hot in my condo.  Tonight should be a little cooler, and I can always take quick breaks to sit in front of the fan!

Wicked Game Review

July 17, 2008 at 10:09 am (Book Reviews) (, , , )

I finished Wicked Game by Jeri Smith-Ready last night. It was an enjoyable read for the most part. Definitely an interesting take on the vampire mythos. After about 80 years a vampire starts to lose a part of his/her personality, becoming empty shells and eventually dying or disappearing. When they die they disappear utterly, all the blood from their final death, vital organs, severed limbs get sucked into the heart until they are no more. There is no evidence or trace that they ever existed except for the clothes and jewelry they were wearing. Vampires in Smith-Ready’s universe are stuck in the Life Time, the moment of their conversion.

The vampires Ciarra meets all work and live at the radio station she was just hired on as a marketing intern. The station is losing money and the owner is ready to sell to the big conglomerate buying up small stations nationally. Unless they can come up with the advertisement sales figures by August, the station is being sold. Ciarra comes up with the brilliant plan of exposing their secret as part of a new sales campaign. The idea being to hide the truth in plain sight because no one would really believe that they’re vampires.

I felt that the story was a just a little too disjointed. The relationship between Shane, the youngest vampire in the group, and Ciarra seems a tad unbelievable. Ciarra’s fear of commitment is real enough, Shane’s puppy dog love? Not so much.

There were too many vamps in that small studio. I had difficulty figuring out which one she was talking about half the time. There was one scene where I thought the author had confused one character for another because I had no idea he was even along for the ride. The author just didn’t spend enough time on each character to really have a feel for who that character was.

I’m not too sure whether I liked Ciarra or not. She was not annoying or whiny and doesn’t seem to get hung up on the big moral issues. I can’t pinpoint why I don’t like this character as much as say Vicky Nelson or Wren Valere. Perhaps because these two although sharing the commitment shyness with Ciarra, are strong self-empowered women. Ciarra is con artist so traumatized by her childhood and her criminal past that she can’t accept that anyone would want her for who she is. Wren and Vicky are too self assured. They are who they are and to heck with anyone who can’t accept that.

All in all, I would give this a 2 1/2 out of 5. Read it if you really need a vampire fix as long as you lower your expectations on that front.
